How To Choose A Horse The Family Can Enjoy
Teddy Roosevelt once said “the best thing for the inside of a man is the outside of a horse’. Horses have an effect on most of us that is almost impossible to describe. Having a horse in the family can be a celebration that all can share. Even if someone doesn’t ride there is something they can do to be a very important part of the horse’s life and the family’s too. There are many breeds of horses, from miniatures that can actually ride in the back seat of a car ( maybe not so good an idea), to majestic and gentle draft horses (who do love to eat and eat etc.Confused? Here ‘s a little help . ) Having a family horse requires some real planning. Selecting a breed that fits your lifestyle and finances is important, horses require good food and safe boarding as well as hoof-care and occasional veterinary visits. When you’ve done your homework it’s time to shop. The internet abounds with a digital pasture of information. Certain breeds are more “user friendly’ than others, if you are planning to compete in horse shows or other events, learn about the breed and train accordingly. Always show to your breed, don’t ask a horse to do things their muscle and physique don’t accommodate, otherwise injuries or disappointment will result.
When you’ve made your breed decision it’s time to go horse-shopping. Once again the internet is where good breeders and horse sellers post their information. Get pictures and videos of how the horse moves before visiting. If the horse does not match up to the video, re-consider. Injuries and other problems don’t always show up on video. Get a vet-check, and don’t get attached yet. Some unethical horse sellers will try to get you emotionally attached to a horse you shouldn’t buy.
A family horse is a celebration of joy, fun and shared responsibility, just the way it should be.
