THE GREYHOUND PAGE

PORTRAIT OF "SPECIAL"
watercolor by Jan Royce Conant (1999)

Special was five years old when I first met her at the adoption center at the Plainfield, CT Dog Track. This is a picture of her on that day when she was taken out of her crate to the exercise yard. She ran to the far corner, and braced herself for what ever horror was about to come. She was terrified, yet she showed no aggression, only total despair and resignation. However, she made direct eye contact with me and I read such a cry for help, there was no way I could leave her there. Special has lived up to her name many times over. She is a very special dog and I cannot imagine life without a greyhound.

  "Special"
  1990 - 2005
Beautiful Special lived to be a healthy and happy almost fifteen year old. She has now moved on to be with her good friend Brigit in Dog Heaven. As stated above, I can't imagine life without a greyhound and already we are blessed with the arrival of "Sheba" . No dog can replace another dog, but a new member of the family goes a long way to fill the empty space.

A real couch potato!

Special's favorite pose!
